5.6 [Tabloid 6]

Headline: KALBARYO: Sangkap sa paggawa ng tinapay, magtataas na rin

After staring at the headline for a few minutes and still not figuring out what "kalbaryo" meant, I gave the third degree to my Filipino-word-smart mother. She explained that "kalbaryo" meant something like "Calvary" which suggests suffering. The headline made me wonder what the appreciation of the value of a certain bread ingredient had to do with suffering. To say the least, the word "suffering" sounded much too heavy a word for anything that had to do with a bread ingredient, which could have been anything from yeast to flour to specialized bread improvers. A fan of bread and bake shops like Bread Talk, I ultimately had to agree with the idea that an increase in the price of a bread ingredient, thus resulting in more expensive bread, is a lot of suffering. The 55-peso "flosss bread" of Bread Talk would probably have to increase in price as well. That would be devastating.
